LNER Peppercorn Class A1 60163 Tornado
The Missing Link: On Friday 1st August 2008, Nearly 60 years after the first Peppercorn class A1 was completed, The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust's 60163 Tornado made her first public move under her own steam at Darlington Locomotive Works.
After eighteen years of planning, construction and fundraising, 60163 Tornado is now ready to take to the rails for the first time. The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust celebrated this momentous day together with a flurry of media interest. The BBC alone had 17 people thereon Friday 1st August – regional, national, radio and web, producing a tremendous amount of air time. The resulting publicity will surely help maintain the goodwill and persuade people to continue to support the trust with much needed donations!
This is the beginning of the final phase for a project that many said could never be completed. In 1990 a group was formed with a vision and a determination to make it succeed. Eighteen years later and thanks to that vision and determination Tornado is complete and ready for trials, thanks to more than 2,000 regular monthly and other donors, plus sponsors led by William Cook Cast Products Limited and the hard work of volunteers and contractors. All that remain now between Tornado and main line operations is the successful completion of her test and trials programme.
60163 will run in grey livery until November when she will be painted in LNER Green BRITISH RAILWAYS Livery at the NRM paint shop York.
